Press Under Pressure — The Chilling Reality of Journalism in Bangladesh
🔹 From Open Dialogue to Controlled Narrative
The Yunus-led transitional government has increasingly cracked down on independent journalism. According to Rights and Rights Analysis Group (RRAG), from August 2024 to March 2025:
-
640 journalists faced attacks or legal harassment
-
206 were victims of physical violence
-
167 had press credentials revoked
-
85 were targeted by financial or intelligence probes
🔹 Silencing the Watchdogs
The crackdown extends across television, online, and print media. Several investigative reporters covering state corruption, cronyism, or the release of Islamist prisoners were targeted. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) also began blocking news sites without public explanation.
“Yunus promised freedom. Instead, we are seeing a chilling erosion of rights,” said an editor from a Dhaka-based daily.
🔹 International Outcry
Organizations like Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) have issued joint statements urging the regime to halt its war on media.
The government claims these steps are aimed at “national security,” but the scale and targeting suggest a deeper motive: narrative control.
