From Delhi to Beijing — Bangladesh’s Diplomatic Freefall
🔹 India: From Ally to Adversary?
Yunus’s relationship with India has dramatically deteriorated. In public interviews, he accused India of “dominating” the region and “destabilizing” Bangladesh’s internal security. In response, Indian officials termed his rhetoric “reckless megaphone diplomacy.”
The cancellation of joint river and trade talks has frozen decades of cooperation. Border skirmishes and smuggling accusations have further increased tensions.
🔹 China: A New Best Friend?
Yunus’s March 2025 state visit to Beijing marked a turning point. Strategic MoUs, infrastructure loans, and port deals were signed—raising fears that Bangladesh is being drawn into China’s debt-trap diplomacy.
Western analysts fear a sharp geopolitical realignment that could pull Bangladesh out of the democratic alliance and into authoritarian alignment.
“What we’re witnessing is not diplomacy—it’s a gamble,” wrote a Brookings Institution fellow.
